Arrived in Williams, Arizona

Vanuit Cortez nemen we 1 dag een auto om Mesa Verde National Park te bezoeken. Hierna fietsen we Utah binnen en rijden we naar Monument Valley. Monument Valley is heel indrukwekkend! Twee dagen na Monument Valley krijgen we weer grote pech; het achterwiel van Fred scheurt open. Hiermee kunnen we niet verder fietsen. Gelukkig kunnen we een lift krijgen waarmee we terug gaan naar Cortez om het wiel bij de fietsenmaker te laten vervangen. Nu alles weer ok is huren we een auto om terug te komen op onze route; we rijden naar Flagstaff, en onderweg bezoeken we Canyon de Chelly National Monument en Petrified Forest National Park. Vanuit Flagstaff fietsen we naar de Grand Canyon National Park: ontzettend mooi! Hierna vervolgen we weer onze route en rijden naar Williams, waar we nu de oude route 66 zullen gaan volgen.

From Cortez we rent a car for 1 day to visit Mesa Verde National Park. After this we cycle into Utah and ride to Monument Valley. Monument Valley is very impressive! Two days after Monument Valley we have some bad luck again; the rim of the rear wheel of Fred's bike tears open. With this we cannot cycle on. Luckily we get a ride back to Cortez, where we can replace the rear wheel at the bicycle shop. Now everything is ok again, we rent a car to return to our route; We drive to Flagstaff and on the way we visit Canyon de Chelly National Monument and Petrified Forest National Park. From Flagstaff we cycle to the Grand Canyon National Park; incredible beautiful! After this we follow our route again and cycle to Williams, where we will follow the old route 66.

We zijn door Rocky Mountain National Park gefietst; Hierbij zijn we over de hoogste weg (de trail ridge road) van Amerika gegaan (12183 ft / 3713 m). Tijdens de afdaling passeren we de Continental Divide bij Milner Pass (10758 ft). Hierna dalen we verder af, maar tijdens deze afdaling breekt de schakelkabel van Jan Dirk zijn achter-derailleur; hierdoor raakt de ketting van de achtertandwielen en dan gaat het echt mis: twee gebroken spaken, 4 verbogen spaken, kettingschakels verbogen. We kunnen de twee gebroken spaken door reparatie-spaken vervangen, maar de gebroken schakelkabel kunnen we niet repareren. Gelukkig stopt ranger Kris die ons verwijst naar haar cabin. Na onze simpele reparatie rijden we (met sleeptouw tussen onze fietsen) daar naar toe. Hier worden we hartelijk ontvangen; we mogen 's avonds mee-eten, gezellig rond het kampvuur en slapen in de schuur. De volgende ochtend brengt John (de man van Kris) ons naar de fietsenmaker, waar we alles kunnen laten repareren, waardoor we gelukkig snel weer verder met onze fietstocht kunnen gaan.
We rijden dwars door de spectaculaire Rocky Mountains (over de Cottonwood Pass, McClure Pass (8755 ft), Dallas Divide (8970 ft), Lizard Head Pass (10222 ft)). Hierbij bezoeken we de Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park.

We cycled through the Rocky Mountain National Park, we cycled across de highest road of America (the trail ridge road; 12183 ft / 3713 m). During the descent we pass the Continental Divide at Milner Pass (10758 ft). After this we descent further, but during this descent the shifting cabel of Jan Dirk his derailler breaks; causing de chain to go from the cassette and break two spokes, bend six other spokes, and bend the chain. We can repair the two broken spokes with repair-spokes, but the broken shifting cabel we cannot repair. Luckily ranger Kris offers her help. After our simple repair we ride (with tow-rope between our bikes) towards her cabin where we are welcomed very friendly; we join dinner, sit around the evening campfire and sleep in the shed. The next morning John (the husband of Kris) takes us to the bicycle repair shop where Jan Dirk his bike is quickly repaired, so we can continue our cycling trip immediately again.
We cycle through the Rocky Mountains (across the Cottonwood Pass, McClure Pass (8755 ft), Dallas Divide (8970 ft), Lizard Head Pass (10222 ft)). We visit the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park on the way.

Arrived in Estes Park, Colorado

Vanaf Rapid City zijn we naar Mount Rushmore gefietst; een indrukwekkend beeldhouwwerk in de berg. Hierna zijn we via de George S Mickelson Trail naar het Crazy Horse Memorial gefietst. Dit is werkelijk een geweldig groot beeldhouwwerk in de maak. Het volgende punt op onze route was Wind Cave National Park; hier zijn we ondergronds gegaan in het meest complexe grottenstelsel van de wereld. Via de Mammoth Site in Hot Springs (South Dakota) fietsten we Wyoming binnen.
In Wyoming fietsen we nu meer zuidwaarts en in Cheyenne laat Jan Dirk zijn tandwielen en ketting vervangen; het rijdt nu weer zeer soepel! In Cheyenne zien we ook de grootste stoomlocomotief van de wereld; 4004 Big Boy.
We zijn nu Colorado binnen gefietst en de Rocky Mountains in geklommen. Morgen gaan we Rocky Mountains National Park in en zullen dan over de hoogste (geasfalteerde weg) pas van Amerika gaan.

From Rapid City we cycled to Mount Rushmore; very impressive sculpture on the mountain. After this we cycled by the George S Mickelson Trail to the Crazy Horse Memorial. This is really an exceptional great sculpture in the making. The next point on our route was the Wind Cave National Park; here we went underground within the most complex cave system of the world. Via the Mammoth Site in Hot Springs (South Dakota) we cycled into Wyoming.
In Wyoming we cycle in a more southern direction and in Cheyenne Jan Dirk has his chain and sprockets replaced; now cycling goes smoothly again! In Cheyenne we also see the biggest steam-locomotive of the world; Big Boy 4004.
We now have cycled into Colorado and started climbing the Rocky Mountains. Tomorrow we will enter the Rocky Mountains National Park and will climb the highest (sealed road) pass of America.

Arrived in Rapid City, South Dakota

We zijn weer terug in de U.S.A. We komen binnen in Minnesota en rijden zo Grand Portage binnen waar we het National Monument bezoeken. Hierna volgen we de kust van Lake Superior helemaal naar Duluth. In Duluth laten we de trapas van Fred zijn fiets vervangen, want de lagers hiervan waren versleten. Joe van Stewart's Bikes and Sports store helpt ons hiermee. Met nieuwe lager rijden we dan vlot door Minnesota naar de grens van South Dakota. Bij het verlaten van Duluth maken de bossen plaats voor grote gebieden met landbouw. Vlak voor de grens in Madison vinden we nog een grote vis (zie foto). Midden op de prairie van South Dakota (in de buurt van Highmore) passeren we het middelpunt van onze fietstocht (± 3500 km). Uiteindelijk komen we dan aan in het Badlands National Park. In extreme warmte fietsen we door dit park over asfalt en zeker ook een lang stuk over gravel, genietend van de werkelijk wonderschone grillige omgeving. We zijn nu net de Black Hills ingetrokken, die we morgen verder zullen verkennen.

We are back in the U.S.A. We arive there in Minnesota state and ride into Grand Portage, where we visit the National Monument. After this we follow the coast line of Lake Superior all the way to Duluth. In Duluth we replace the bottom bracket of Fred's bike, because the bearings were worn out. Joe of Stewart's Bikes and Sports store helps us to replace the bottom bracket. With the new bearings we quickly ride through Minnesota to the border of South Dakota. When leaving Duluth, the forests are replaced by farmland. Just before the border we find a big fish in Madison (see photo). In the middle of the prairie of South Dakota (around Highmore) we pass the midway point of our cycling trip (± 3500 km). Eventually we arrive at the Badlands National Park. In extreme heat we cycle through this park on sealed and on gravel roads, enjoying the really beautiful surroundings. We now just entered the Black Hills, which we will explore tomorrow.

Het is al weer enige tijd geleden, maar nu hierbij de lang verwachte update. We zijn naar het noordelijke puntje van de Bruce Peninsula gereden en hebben daar de veerboot naar Manitoulin-eiland genomen. Hierna zijn we de Transcanadian Highway opgedraaid en langs de grote meren (Huron en Superior) gefietst. Hierbij zijn we door een geweldig mooie omgeving gefietst; bosrijk met vele meertjes.
In Nipigon hebben we het meest noordelijke punt van onze route bereikt; de 49 graden noorderbreedte. Nu fietsen we dus weer naar het zuidwesten, richting de Amerikaanse grens, die we morgen verwachten te passeren.
Tijdens de fietstocht over de Transcanadian Highway komen we vele ander vakantiefietsers tegen; velen maken de fietstocht van Vancouver naar St. John, New Foundland.

It's been some time ago, but finally here is the next update. We cycled to the most northern point of the Bruce Peninsula and there we took the ferry across to Manitoulin-island. After that we turned on to the Transcanadian Highway and cycled along the great lakes (Huron and Superior). This took us through some beautiful scenery; wooded with lot of small lakes.
In Nipigon we reached the most northern point of our route; the 49th parallel. So now we are cycling towards the southwest again, towards the American border, which we expect to cross tomorrow.
During our cycling on the Transcanadian Highway we met a lot of other cyclists; many of them are making the trip from Vancouver to St. John, New FoundLand.

Vandaag weer heerlijk gefietst door een matig heuvelachtig gebied. Hierdoor konden we er goed de snelheid in houden. Hier op de camping hebben we het filmpje van Channel-9 kunnen bekijken. Erg leuk om ons zo terug te zien.
Ook hebben we nog een aantal foto's toegevoegd aan de vorige twee berichten.

Today we had a great cycling day through some "small hills"-country. That's why we good keep our speed up nicely. Here at the campsite we could watch the movie from Channel-9. It's nice to see ourselves in this way.
We have also added some new pictures to our two previous postings.

De ochtend na onze vorige post, werden we verrast door een reporter van Channel-9. We werden door hem uitgebreid geïnterviewd en gefilmd bij het voorbereiden van ons vertrek.

We ontmoeten veel vriendelijke mensen onderweg; we worden vaak aangesproken.
We zijn de State New York geheel doorgefietst en we zijn nu in Canada, Niagara Falls. Hier hebben we natuurlijk de watervallen bekeken; zeer indrukwekkend. Het fietsen gaat super; na een flinke onweersbui is het met de temperatuur nu veel aangenamer om te fietsen.

The morning after our previous post we were surprised by a reporter from Channel-9. We were interviewed extendly and filmed while preparing for departure.

We have cycled completely through the state New York and are now in Ontario, Canada.
At Niagara Falls we of course visited the impressive falls.

Arrived in Navarino, New York

Na een vlucht van 8 uur landen we in Boston. Op de luchthaven zetten we fietsen in elkaar en rijden dan naar de ferry. We missen net de grote ferry en besluiten dan om een kleine watertaxi te nemen. We varen hierin naar downtown met een mooi uitzicht op de skyline van Boston.
Na een eerste overnachting in een hotel in Boston starten we aan ons fietsavontuur. Het is heel warm hier (elke dag minstens 30 graden celcius), wat het fietsen met de redelijke steile beklimmingen tamelijk zwaar maakt. Maar toch weten we we de snelheid er in te houden.
We zijn al de Apalachen overgestoken en zijn van Massachussets naar New York state gereden. We zijn nu in Navarino aangekomen en verwachten in ongeveer drie dagen de Niagara watervallen te bereiken.

After a flight of 8 hours we arrived at Boston. At the airport we assemble the bicycles and cycle to the ferry. We just miss the big ferry and decide to take the smaller water taxi. With this we travel to downtown with a very nice view of the Boston skyline.
After a first night in a hotel in Boston we start our adventure. It is pretty warm here (every day at least 30 degrees celcius), which makes cycling with the seemly steap climbs pretty tough. But we are still able to get a decent average speed.
We already crossed the Apalachian Mountains and crossed the state border from Massachussets to New York. We just arrived in Navarino en expect to arrive at the Niagara waterfalls within about three days.

Today we're packing our bikes and luggage for our trip. Tomorrow we fly to Boston to start our cycling adventure. It will be an 8 hour flight and the time difference with Holland will be 6 hours.
