Op dag 80 van onze fietstocht zijn we aangekomen bij de Santa Monica pier in Los Angeles na 6819 km fietsen.

We've done it!

On day 80 of our cycling trip we arrived at the Santa Monica pier in Los Angeles after 6819 km of cycling.

Arrived in Victorville, California

Na Williams rijden we over Route 66 naar Nevada. In Laughlin vieren we Fred zijn verjaardag met een overheerlijke steak in het casino aldaar. Hierna rijden we de zeer hete Mojave woestijn in Californië in. We willen via de Mojave Road naar Death Valley N.P. rijden, maar wijken hier vanaf omdat we niet genoeg water voor het hele stuk kunnen meenemen. We verleggen daarom de route iets zuidelijker en fietsen langs het Joshua Tree N.P. Omdat we door de woestijn fietsen is het elke dag in de middag boven de 30 graden. Daarom beginnen we vroeg en fietsen we alleen 's ochtends en laat in de middag.

After Williams we cycle on Route 66 to Nevada. In laughlin we celebrate Fred's birthday with a delicious steak in the casino there. After this we cycle into the Mojave desert in California. We want to cycle on the Mojave Road to Death Valley N.P., but we cannot take enough water with to cross the complete road. So we take a more southerly route along Joshua Tree N.P. Because we are cycling through the desert and every day it's more than 100 degrees Fahrenheit, we start early in the morning and cycle only mornings and in the late afternoon.

Arrived in Williams, Arizona

Vanuit Cortez nemen we 1 dag een auto om Mesa Verde National Park te bezoeken. Hierna fietsen we Utah binnen en rijden we naar Monument Valley. Monument Valley is heel indrukwekkend! Twee dagen na Monument Valley krijgen we weer grote pech; het achterwiel van Fred scheurt open. Hiermee kunnen we niet verder fietsen. Gelukkig kunnen we een lift krijgen waarmee we terug gaan naar Cortez om het wiel bij de fietsenmaker te laten vervangen. Nu alles weer ok is huren we een auto om terug te komen op onze route; we rijden naar Flagstaff, en onderweg bezoeken we Canyon de Chelly National Monument en Petrified Forest National Park. Vanuit Flagstaff fietsen we naar de Grand Canyon National Park: ontzettend mooi! Hierna vervolgen we weer onze route en rijden naar Williams, waar we nu de oude route 66 zullen gaan volgen.

From Cortez we rent a car for 1 day to visit Mesa Verde National Park. After this we cycle into Utah and ride to Monument Valley. Monument Valley is very impressive! Two days after Monument Valley we have some bad luck again; the rim of the rear wheel of Fred's bike tears open. With this we cannot cycle on. Luckily we get a ride back to Cortez, where we can replace the rear wheel at the bicycle shop. Now everything is ok again, we rent a car to return to our route; We drive to Flagstaff and on the way we visit Canyon de Chelly National Monument and Petrified Forest National Park. From Flagstaff we cycle to the Grand Canyon National Park; incredible beautiful! After this we follow our route again and cycle to Williams, where we will follow the old route 66.
